Fraxel® laser is a non-ablative, fractionated, laser-based device that is used to improve sun damage, brown spots, scars, skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, and precancerous skin lesions.
Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing results in evening of skin color, tightening of skin tone, and resurfacing of precancerous skin lesions which all may have been caused by sun exposure over one's lifetime. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained cosmetic dermatologic surgeons and expertly trained advanced practice providers safely and effectively perform skin laser resurfacing with Fraxel® laser.
Fraxel® laser has two wavelengths that penetrate the skin's outer layer (epidermis) and inner layer (dermis). These wavelengths resurface the outer layer of the skin which can help with sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), and superficial skin lesions (actinic keratoses) and also create heated columns in the inner layer of the skin which can help tighten skin and stimulate the production of collagen to improve scars and fine lines and wrinkles.
Before your treatment, you may apply a topical anesthetic cream approximately 30 minutes prior to your procedure that will help decrease skin sensation during your Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing procedure.
During your treatment, you will feel a cool stream of air directed at your treatment area while you feel the effect of the Fraxel® laser. Most patients feel mild and tolerable discomfort during their treatment. Depending on your treatment area(s), your procedure is typically performed quickly over several minutes.
After your treatment, you should expect to feel a mild amount of skin swelling, warmth, and stinging. Your skill will be immediately treated with lotion, sunblock, and a cool compress. You should expect to experience redness and mild skin peeling for several days after your treatment.
It is very important to practice excellent sun protection for several weeks after your treatment. You will be provided with post-procedure instructions during your visit.
You will notice immediate effects from your treatment within 1-2 weeks and long-term effects from your treatment over 3-4 months. If multiple treatments are recommended, they are typically separated by 4-6 weeks.
